How to Test Your Bath Bombs for Quality Control

Before making your bath bombs available to purchase, make sure to test them using these methods first

Creating bath bombs can be a fun and rewarding process, but ensuring their quality is crucial, especially if you plan to sell them.

Quality control tests help ensure that your bath bombs perform well, look appealing and are safe to use. Here’s a guide on how to test your bath bombs for quality control to ensure they meet the highest standards.

Visual Inspection

The first step in quality control is a thorough visual inspection. Check for uniformity in size and shape, ensuring that each bath bomb is moulded correctly and without cracks or crumbles. The surface should be smooth and free from any visible imperfections.

Fizz and Foam Test

To assess the performance of your bath bombs, fill a bowl or bathtub with warm water and drop in a bath bomb. Observe the reaction closely, as you want your bath bomb to start fizzing immediately, releasing a steady stream of bubbles.

If you’ve included foaming agents like Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA), you should also see a rich foam forming.

Fragrance and Colour Release

During the fizz and foam test, pay attention to the release of fragrance and colour. A well-made bath bomb will disperse its fragrance evenly, creating a pleasant and lasting scent in the water. The colour should also spread evenly without leaving any residue on the tub or your skin.

Skin Sensitivity Test

It’s essential to ensure that your bath bombs are safe and gentle on the skin. Conduct a skin sensitivity test by using a small piece of the bath bomb on your skin or by asking willing participants to try it. Monitor for any adverse reactions such as redness, itching, or irritation.

Longevity and Storage Test

Finally, test the longevity and storage stability of your bath bombs by storing a few samples in different conditions such as a humid environment and in direct sunlight. Check them periodically for any signs of degradation as high-quality bath bombs should maintain their shape, colour, and fragrance for several months when stored in a cool, dry place.
