What to Charge? Pricing Tips for Market Season

Simple ways to price smarter this market season

Selling your creations at a summer market is exciting, but deciding what to charge can quickly kill your confidence. But if you’re not sure where to start or feel awkward asking for more than just your costs, you’re not alone.

Here’s a no-fuss guide to help you set prices that make sense, support your business and still feel good to say out loud.

Know Your Costs First 🧮

Before anything else, figure out what each product actually costs you to make. That includes ingredients, packaging, labels and anything else that goes into the final item.

Then look at the extras like your stall fee, travel and wrapping. Divide the full cost by the number of items you plan to sell. That’s your base cost, and your pricing should build from there. Watch Jay’s tutorial HERE.

Use the 3x Rule as a Guide 📊

A simple starting point is the “times three” rule. Take your total cost and multiply it by three to get your retail price.

So if a melt and pour bar costs you £1.50 to make, your price would be around £4.50. This allows for profit, covers your time and helps you stay sustainable long term.

Think About Your Market Stall’s Vibe 🎨

A pretty market stall can justify a higher price without saying a word. If your display looks polished and consistent, shoppers will naturally expect a more premium price.

Keep things tidy, use matching signage and create a vibe that reflects your brand. You don’t need to spend loads to make it feel professional, just give it your unique touch!

Round with Confidence 💷

Shoppers are used to round numbers at markets. £4 feels better than £3.87, and bundle deals like “2 for £8” make it easier for them to decide quickly.

Say your prices with confidence, and customers will trust the value. If you sound unsure, they’ll be more likely to hesitate.

Check Out the Local Scene 👀

Take a walk around your market before you start selling. What are other soap makers or wax melt sellers charging?

This helps you stay in range without feeling like you need to undercut. If your quality is higher or your product is unique, it is completely fine to charge a little more.
