Our top tips for achieving rich, vibrant colours every time
Whether you’re battling pale colours or struggling with streaks and dots, improving your bath bomb colouring technique can elevate your creations from “meh” to marvellous. Here’s how to achieve rich, even colours every time.
Perfect Your Dye Technique 🧪
If you’re working with water-soluble dyes, a common question is whether to dissolve them in water beforehand.
Many crafters recommend using small, precise amounts of dye and water for consistent results. For example, using 0.3g of dye in a 1kg batch is a reliable starting point. Make sure to dissolve the dye in boiling water first, as it helps the colour blend smoothly without streaks or dots.
Some makers pre-mix a larger quantity of dye solution in advance for efficiency. This is especially handy for challenging colours like red and black, which are notorious for being uneven or dull without proper blooming.
The Power of Blooming 🎨
Blooming your bicarb (pre-colouring it) can be transformative, particularly for intense shades like black or red.
For black, combining multiple pigments to achieve a rich, deep tone can prevent the dreaded “grey fade,” leaving your bath water a luscious purple-black instead.
Experiment with Colour Ratios 🌈
Everyone’s recipe is unique, so experimentation is key to finding what works in your environment.
If colours aren’t dissolving fully, you may need to tweak your water-to-dye ratio slightly. For instance, adding 2ml of water to 0.3g of dye and adjusting as needed ensures a smooth mix.
Overcome Common Challenges 💪🏼
Many crafters face obstacles with specific colours, white being one of the trickiest, but patience and persistence are vital here.
Play around with different techniques, log your results and don’t be afraid to experiment until you find your perfect process.
Practice Makes Perfect ✨
Just like learning any craft, improving your bath bomb colouring technique takes practice.
Don’t be discouraged if you hit roadblocks. Every crafter has challenges to overcome, but these are stepping stones to mastering your art.
